What: My Big Fat Organic Cotton and Hemp Nut Milk Sacks
I’ve made nut milk before, but since coming into 2nd trimester of my pregnancy, all I ever want to drink in the morning are smoothies. It’s also freezing here in NJ so not how long I can keep up with this craving. For my smoothies, I’ve also been wanting and craving to use nut milk instead of regular cow’s milk. I started getting bad pregnancy heartburn and read that the fat in cow’s milk can sometimes alleviate this, but can also make it worst. I also have found that I am now very sensitive to the smell of cow’s milk (I was before so I would never out right drink it), so nut milk was my alternative.
A friend actually gave me these nut milk sacks to try. She produces them and I thought this would be the perfect time to try them out. I normally make a batch of nut milk, using a combination of almonds and cashews. I just recently added a few dates while it soaks to add some sweetness. I’m the worst at measuring for recipes so you’ll have to find a measured recipe online. I soak the almonds and cashews (I like the two together) directly in the blender overnight along with the dates and blend in the morning. I’ve been pretty on point lately with making around a quart a week which ensures I have a fresh supply of nut milk in the fridge.
I normally prepare my smoothies ahead of time, like the night before, especially if I have to be somewhere early in the morning. I add all of my ingredients directly to a large mouth mason jar. I add the nut milk right before I blend it all together with an immersion blender. Sometimes, I am too lazy to bring and clean the large blender so as long as the fruits are soft, the immersion blender does the job.
Below I list some of my favorite smoothie combinations to use with the freshly squeezed nut milk.

Background
BlankItConcepts created these nut milk sacks after seeing a need for them in the market. I love the play on the name, but maybe because I still have that childish humor: My Big Fat Nut Sacks - Two Sacks Are Better Than One. Ha ha.
Material
The nut milk bags are made of 100% organic cotton and 100% natural hemp. It’s compostable and and can pass the burn test, but I didn’t burn this one because I quite like them.
Sizes
The bags are around 12x12 inches so it’s easy to fill and easy to squeeze. You don’t want a large bag anyways because the more pulp you put in the harder it is to squeeze to get the milk out.
Product Packaging
The two bags come in a plastic pouch with a paper label and two other labels distinguishing between the cotton and hemp. You can request that they be shipped without the plastic and the seller will comply. I asked and she will just reuse the plastic bag for something else in her store.
Cost
$14 USD for a set of 2.
Where to Buy
Currently on their website, BlankItConcepts or on Amazon
Shipping Packaging
This item was personally handed to me so no shipping, but as I mention above, you can ask the seller to skip the plastic before it gets shipped to you.
Verdict
It’s a buy.
If you look at the images above, you’ll see there’s a difference in the mesh for the hemp and cotton. I do prefer the hemp a bit more because it appears to have larger openings which means straining it is much faster. I found no large pulp when making my milk using the hemp bag.
I made sure to wash both before I used them initially. After using them, I just hand wash them with a bit of dish soap and hang them by the sink. It dries pretty quickly so it’s easy to put away.
If you don’t end up using both, you can always reuse one of them for bulk items like nuts or rice. It’s easy enough to reuse, though I would recommend reserving one strictly for nuts to reduce contamination. This has been important to me since I don’t normally boil the milk when I drink and being pregnancy puts me at risk for certain food borne bacteria so I am just being overly cautious.
What to do with the pump: make it into cookies or bake into a cake. The pump is a great wheat flour substitute.
Smoothie Ideas
Banana-Coffee-Almond-Oatmeal Smoothie
Leftover coffee (allows me to use up leftover coffee from my husband’s morning French press)
1-2 bananas
2-3 tablespoons of almond butter
1/3 cup of oatmeal
1 tbsp chia seeds
Nut milk
I normally pre-make the coffee, banana, almond butter, oatmeal inside a large mouth mason jar the night before. I then add the nut milk before I blend and transfer to a reusable plastic container if I am leaving the house for the day so it fits in the car cup holder.
Banana-Cantaloupe Smoothie
Sliced cantaloupe
Bananas
Nut milk
Same preparation as above. I no longer freeze the bananas because it’s already pretty cold here and leaving it pre-cut in the fridge over night results in a pretty cold drink. Plus, it makes it easy to use the immersion blender to cut it all up.
Do you make your own non-dairy milk? Do you use a nut or rice or oats?
